The National Weather Service (NWS) in Sterling Virginia has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for The District of Columbia, which is in effect until this evening at 9 PM EDT. Scattered severe thunderstorms with damaging wind gusts, large hail, and isolated tornadoes are possible during this time. Additionally, isolated occurrences of flash flooding are also possible. IMPACT: Damaging winds will cause some trees and large branches to fall. This could injure those outdoors, as well as damage homes and vehicles. Roadways may become blocked by downed trees. Localized power outages are possible. Unsecured light objects may become projectiles. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS: -Check the forecast before venturing out. Driving could become dangerous due to flash flooding. -Never drive through standing water or flooded roadways. You risk your life and the lives of first responders. Turn around, don’t drown saves lives. -Secure loose objects outside your home (for example: patio furniture, grills, and garbage cans). -Clean out your gutters so water can move away from your home. -Keep your cell phones charged in case you lose power. -Sign up for AlertDC – alertdc.dc.gov
