One of our Brightwood neighbors came up with this wonderful idea and allowed me to share with the broader community. I think this is a great way to safely ring in the New Year!!!
"In the spirit of peace, joy, hope, and health, I am emailing to share with all of you an idea that several of your fellow Brightwood neighbors on Van Buren and Underwood streets have already been discussing. We hope that other neighbors on other streets will do the same and make it a neighborhood-wide activity.
We're proposing First Night Brightwood, a physically distant celebration, on Friday, January 1, 2021, from 3:30 to 6:30 PM. (Raindate: Saturday, January 2, at the same time.)
Before we hibernate for the winter, we want to kick off the New Year by masking up and encouraging our neighbors to connect with other neighbors in a fun and safe way that keeps physical distance.
Some folks might want to bring their fire pits and lawn chairs to their front lawn and roast marshmallows. (This is what we plan to do!) Other neighbors may choose to walk around their block with their own mug of hot chocolate in hand.
So, let's put on our winter coats and cutest masks so we can share good cheer at the start of 2021 from the safe physical distance of
--our front lawns,
--our porches,
--our stoops,
--our balconies, and
--our sidewalks
All we ask for is your positive community spirit and willingness to keep yourself and others safe by following DC and DC COVID-19 protocols. And of course, please keep all conversation, music, and activities healthy and appropriate for all of our youngest neighbors, from youngest to oldest.
2020 has been a challenging year for many of us. As we reflect on all we've experienced, let's start 2021 by building community spirit from a phyical distance before the COVID vaccines start to break the back of this virus.
We hope that many Brightwood neighbors will join in the fun and fellowship for our [first annual?] FIRST NIGHT BRIGHTWOOD on JANUARY 1st from 3:30-6:30 PM!"
