The Hands-on -Heart Program was established to help bridge the gap between EMS care by local emergency medical field providers and a quick response by a community member to average citizen in need. Our mission is to educate and strengthen an average citizen knowledge and ability to step up and help when they witness someone having a medical emergency.
Most people who experience cardiac arrest at home, work, or in a public location die because they don't receive immediate CPR from someone on the scene. CPR performed by bystanders before emergency services arrival is one of the most important factors for surviving an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Immediate CPR can double or triple chances of survival after cardiac arrest and data shows that 45 percent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest victims survived when bystander CPR was given, But only about 46 percent of those who suffered cardiac arrests outside of a hospital in 2017 received bystander CPR. Our goal is to increase survival rate by increasing the number of District citizens and visitors that are trained and skilled to provide bystander CPR.
Our Hands-only CPR awareness training utilizes a technique that involves chest compressions without mouth-to-mouth. The training instructs participants to focus on their hand placement, tempo, and the number of compressions.
Note that Hands Only CPR does not provide participants with certification in CPR or a certification card. Please contact our CPR Training Program officer at Karl.robinson@dc.gov or call 202.673.6901
