July SMD Meeting Notes

Good morning,

During the July 2020 SMD meeting for ANC 4B06 we had a great conversation with Frazier O'Leary, Ward 4 State Board of Education Representative about the current status of the ReOpen DC plan for DCPS schools as well as information about the Mrs. O'Learly's Books4Friends Book Drive on July 8, 2020. Mr. O'Leary has been a steward through his tenure in collecting books for our Ward 4 schools in honor of his late wife. This past drive netted almost 5000 books. I am sure as we move forward, there will be other opportunities to donate to this worthy charity.

I also gave a quick update on MPD stats throughout ANC 4B provided by Captain Connors:

-To date, total crime is up in 4B. However, violent crime is down.

-ANC 4B has had 421 crimes compared to 335 last year. Out of those, 32 were violent crimes compared to 33 last year.

-Property crime is up. To date, there have been 389 property crimes compared to 302 last year.

-The most significant increase has been theft from automobiles which 191 this year vs. 136 last year.

Captain Connors provided the attached "Protecting Your Vehicle" flyer to provide additional information to the community as this is a very common crime which can be prevented.

I also provided an update on some long-awaited renovations to the picnic shelter at Fort Slocum Park. Due to a collaborative effort among ANC 4B06, NPS and the Rock Creek Conservancy, Landis Architects/Builders VOLUNTEERED to restore the area. I have reached out them everyone to extend my gratitude on behalf of the community and when able to gather safely, I hope to formally and publicly thank the Conservancy, NPS and Landis for their in-kind contribution.

In addition to the renovated picnic area, NPS is also expected to add pet waste stations along Kansas Avenue near the picnic shelter. We are asking a few residents to assist in keeping this station stock with bags, which NPS will purchase. I have reached out to several individuals and hope to develop a rotation calendar so it doesn't all fall to one person. Please email me at 4b06@anc.dc.gov or call me at 202.271.3710.

Lastly, I will be taking a sabbatical from our monthly SMD meetings for the month of August. However, I will still be working to advocate for the interests of ANC 4B06 and you can always reach out to me regarding constituent concerns.

Thank you.
