My DC, My Future - Budget Advocacy for Youth

A message from my fellow Commissioner, Erin Palmer, 4B02:

Hello, neighbors, friends, and community leaders,

Please join us in lifting up our youngest voices in DC budget advocacy!

Fair Budget Coalition is hosting its Second Annual My DC, My Future event to educate and engage youth in the DC budget process. We are asking kids and families to record a video, draw a picture, or write a letter or email about what they care about and how the DC budget can support our communities. (I've attached one of my favorite submissions from last year.)

There will be a virtual kickoff event on April 16th at 4:00 p.m. that will include a fun and easy game to learn about the DC budget, showcasing of past submissions to give participants ideas, and questions to prompt kids to share their vision for DC. Kids and families will share your videos, pictures, and letters on social media or directly with Fair Budget Coalition between April 19th and April 21st. We will be holding a raffle for all kids/families that participate, with some gift cards from Mahogany Books and Pleasant Pops as prizes.

If you are interested in attending, you can RSVP here for the event and for log-in details for the virtual kickoff: https://docs.google.com/.../1FAIpQLScbqiQpWG6pSn.../viewform. And you can find the participation RSVP form, event instructions, an event flyer, prompts and templates (forthcoming), and a photo release form here: https://drive.google.com/.../1bGoJhZjoB5rolbPLu2Hjj3rW9gT....

One of the reasons I love this event is that it started with a kids' lobby day that Eric (husband) and I organized in 2017. We connected with so many amazing kids, who passionately talked with the Councilmembers about the issues they care about and their hopes for the future. You can see one of my kids in the attached photo making his opinions known to former Councilmember Brandon Todd. I'm constantly inspired by my kids and our city's youth, and I love encouraging their civic participation and helping to make it fun and easy.

I hope you will join us and help us spread the word. A flyer is attached, and the Facebook event link is here: https://fb.me/e/1k59kcShM. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

Thanks so much,

Erin
