Update on Traffic Calming Along Kansas Ave

Writer's picture: Tiffani JohnsonTiffani Johnson

In response to one of myriad 311 requests for traffic calming measures along Kansas Avenue I received the following response from DDOT:

"On 8/2/21 a shop order was created to install a total of eight 25mph signs along Kansas Ave between Missouri Ave and Blair Rd NW, both directions. Speeding is a type of aggressive driving behavior. Most motorists rarely drive aggressively, and some never do. For others, episodes of aggressive driving are frequent, and for a small proportion of motorists it is their usual driving behavior. Hence, the most effective way to address these drivers is enforcement by the police. With the installation of additional speed limit signs along this section of Kansas Ave, it should remind drivers of the regulatory speed limit and deterred speeding."

While I am thankful for the additional signage, I remain extremely concerned that this stop-gap measure isn't nearly sufficient to deter the amount of speeding, traffic accidents and near misses especially at Kansas and Madison, Kansas and Longfellow and the intersection of Blair Rd, Kansas and North Dakota Avenues.

I will continue to press DDOT for the additional traffic calming measures we have been asking for over the years I have been your Commissioner.
